Review of Robin Hood (2009) by Cara R — 23 Aug 2012
Okay, so I have to write about this movie because it was just SO bad. I've seen worse, and the movie was entertaining, but so much of it really, really annoyed me. So where to begin. First of all, this is set in medieval England, and robin hood has an american accent.
Like Costner puts absolutely NO effort into sounding English, even though his character is an English knight or whatever. Maid Marian has a terrible accent that is pretty much just American. Christian Slater's accent is bad too.
Couldn't they have cast more British actors?! Second, Costner obviously has a really big ego. He frequently stands on top of things posing, like we the audience are supposed to find him handsome and heroic because he does these meaningless things.
Third, there is no depth of characterization. Like the character Robin Hood is shown to have no flaws, be great at everything, always a hero, "handsome", achieve superhuman feats, ect (because Kevin Costner is obviously in love with himself).
Morgan Freeman is great, but his character is also one-dimensional. The cinematography is annoying and distracting at times, because of the over use of weird angles and flashy techniques that add nothing to what is supposed to be a basic period adventure film.
Alan Rickman is good, but for some reason his character is the son of a creepy devil worshiping corpse witch lady, FOR NO REASON. The rest of the movie looks fairly realistic, but they add in this fantasy element of a witch that is never explained.
The sheriff could have been a mean tax collector and been fine, rather than have those unnecessary witch scenes.
