Review of Robin Hood (2009) by Suzi G — 20 Mar 2014
I remember absolutely LOVING this film back in the day. The story was great; Morgan Freeman blew me away and Kevin Costner was just sexy...or was he? Besides not having an English (any variation an English accent...he's straight out of LA) when I rewatched this recently I realized this film really isn't as great as I remember it. His delivery is just awful most of the time and down right boring. Freeman is still amazing to me and though I have problems with the character as written, it's still well done for what he had to work with.
Alan Rickman is just plain freaking insane. Having watched a version with some added scenes I saw a completely different Sheriff. In the theatrical cut he's devious and just plain power hungry. In the extended edition he's just batshitcrazy. It was almost frustratingly weird. The theatrical cut makes him a decent villain; add in those extra scenes and he's just a whiny little baby who is truly insane.
But what I loved the first time and love still is the score. It flowed beautifully and accentuated the film perfectly. I seem to remember that the studio kept that opening theme for their logo for quite a while. It's that amazing. Not as excited about Bryan Adams' song, but that's just time and overexposure.
Whether you like it or not, it will still cut your heart out with a spoon.
