Review of Roald Dahl's Matilda the Musical (2022) by Bertobellamy — 27 Dec 2022
'Matilda' is back as a musical for television, and although it has hilarious moments, the shadow of the 90s adaptation looms over it in many aspects. The best part is the musical numbers; the editing and choreography are exceptional, giving the story excellent dynamism when presented.
Emma Thompson's performance is incredible; her interpretation of Trunchbull is grotesque and convincing. She is the soul of the movie. Perhaps the weakest part of this new version is Matilda herself since little Alisha Weir does not generate so much sympathy.
Similarly, Lashana Lynch as Miss Honey does not contribute much; her character is the least interesting of all. I think she's miscast. And, for the umpteenth time, Netflix extends the length of its products more than necessary; about 90-95 minutes would have been perfect.
