Review of Roads to Koktebel (2003) by Lauren T — 31 Mar 2008
This movie has some brilliant moments - the son seeing the world from above, crying in a desolate field, and standing in the middle of a room at night staring out the window to see a ghost of himself below.
It is both depressingly realistic and calculatedly symbolic, which in the end is too strong a combination to acheive anything very new or meaningful. But it is a quiet and painfully accurate portrait of a boy growing up with no direction home.
