Review of Road Trip (2000) by Kj P — 15 Jun 2011
I was intrigued by the premise of Road Trip expecting it be the definitive college road trip movie, but instead two unwatchable characters ruin it. I have never seen a movie with a bigger clash between the likable and unlikable characters. Breckin Meyer, Seann William Scott, and Paulo Costanzo work just fine in their roles, but this movie is heavily bogged down by DJ Qualls and Tom Green. When Qualls was introduced I was hoping that the other characters would just take his car and leave this guy behind. But in order to have the socially awkward geek on the trip, they have to bring him along. Tom Green might also be the worst, most obnoxious actor of all-time. This movie would have worked pretty well if it was just Meyer, Scott, and Costanzo on the road trip to Texas with the same exact premise, but I am not kidding when I say that Qualls ruins the fun of the movie significantly. Also the stupid cuts back to Green serve no purpose and are just disgusting.
Besides the characters, the movie certainly loses focus halfway through and we kind of forget why they are even traveling. The obstacles they face start out as funny but then start to get stupid and even mean-spirited towards the end.
There were a few laughs to get me through it, and I did appreciate Amy Smart and Breckin Meyer; it was great seeing them in Rat Race together as well. But overall, this movie could have been way better.
