Review of Road to Perdition (2002) by Rhett P — 10 Oct 2015
Road to Perdition is directed by master director Sam Mendes (American Beauty) and stars Tom Hanks, Jude Law, Daniel Craig, and Paul Newman. Hanks and Craig are gangsters that work for Newman. When Hank's son witnesses something involving the two, things spin out of hand and Hanks and his son must run away and avoid trouble.
I love this movie. it has a special place for me as I watched it with my dad for the first time and this movie is a father and son story. but that does not mean that this movie is just good because it has a special place in my heart, it is a fantastic movie.
The acting is phenomenal. Tom Hanks is pure perfection and this remains to be one of my favorite roles of his. Daniel Craig is great as the unstable son of Paul Newman. Jude Law gives his best performance as the endlessly creepy Hitman who is sent to kill Hanks and his son. Newman is very good as well.
Sam Mendes is one of the best directors of all time. He has never made a poorly shot film, or one that has anything less than great cinematography. and this movie is no different. Perfect directing that makes the movie that much better.
The score to this movie is haunting and beautiful in every way. I get chills every time I hear Jude Law's theme. it is fantastic.
My only flaw is that the movie has some pacing issues. one minute is is heart pounding and right after it can screech to a halt sometimes. not a huge flaw but definitely is a little bothersome. I also hate the narration at the beginning and the very end. It is useless and felt a little iut of place.
Overall this is a must see movie. very good father and son movie as well. I love this movie and if you enjoy an unconventional mob movie this is one for anyone over the age of 13.
9.1/10.
