Review of Road to Morocco (1942) by Jake C — 07 May 2018
Hope and Crosby are charmingly clever, the music is quite enchanting, and the rest is muck. Racist, sexist, homophobic, and so on-of course, the movie reflects its time in those ways, but that doesn't make it entertaining to watch Hope do a poor mockery of a mentally challenged person.
While we should have the capacity to historicize without judgment, that doesn't mean the viewer should have to excuse without reflection, and simply put, that stuff today lands with a foul thud.
