Review of Road Hard (2015) by William B — 08 Mar 2015
I'm a fan and supporter of Adam's podcast and books, but I found this hard to sit through. His acting ability runs from serviceable to painful at times.
I'm OK with the generic low budget quality of the film - others have made smaller budgets sing, and I don't see that here, but the work is competent. The content is the problem. Mediocre writing with occasionally brutal acting.
Koechner and Grier fit in effortlessly in their small scenes. Rosenthal sticks out like a sore thumb and the talented Larry Miller was wildly miscast as Babydoll. You can see how hard they went after jokes that fell flat - part of the magic is not making your intentions so painfully obvious. Miller bumped me out of it.
Adam is tremendous on the fly and is one of the great radio/podcast personalities of his generation. To be on camera, however, is a different story. You either need to be talented at acting or simply compelling to watch and he's missing both. Hard times.
