Review of Road Hard (2015) by Poochie's U — 23 Mar 2015
I'm another huge longtime fan of Ace, and I really wanted this to be good, and happily prepurchased this movie to support and give something back to someone who has made me laugh for almost 2 decades.
so I take no joy from the beat down I'm about to give this movie. Maybe for non-fan type it works, but for me, It's not good. From the opening rehashed radio bit that fans have heard dozens of times, to the random ending, I don't think I laughed once.
And the rehashing never stops. It is the movie version of a comic on a.m. radio getting set up by the host to shoehorn jokes into the interview. the DAG bits, which are some of the funniest moments ever on the podcast, fall flat and pale, because they are randomly force fed into the script.
I couldn't stop thinking of how Adam always says everyone needs a friend or wife to stop them from leaving the house looking stupid in their new cowboy boots. He should've hired his buddy Ray, to stand on set and say "dude, wtf are you thinking?".
the crew needed a Ray, or anyone, to stand up and point out that Adam playing sweet, loving, semi polite, quiet, victim of the Hollywood system, is not genuine, or funny. I kept thinking that they should've had a different actor play adam/bruce, (and maybe have Adam cameo as Ray), or make him over the top obnoxious with some Adam-esque angry rants, or unlikable, kinda like a Larry David.
it's too bad because Adam knows how to paint a picture of characters of real life very well, but perhaps he is too close to his own character to portray himself effectively and believably. It also brings to mind Adam's frequent condemnation of lazy artistic attempts, ala Sid and Marty Croft, who uncreatively regurgitate what they think worked before, just to sell another product .
this feels like that. I still think that Adam is one of the funniest guys in America, but not at all in this format, it is simply too contrived, and totally becomes a Lifetime afterschool movie once it turns rom com.
The unnecessary smoochie montage scenes only seemed to serve as a vehicle to get some lip action, outside of his real life marriage. I will still be fan of Adam, and continue to drag friends to his live shows and podcasts, because there is no one funnier live and in the moment,,, but I just have to call it as I sees it.
on the upside, I have a feeling the Paul Newman doc will be awesome.
