Review of RKO 281 (1999) by Andrey B — 03 Mar 2014
The battle Orson Welles faced to both make his masterpiece, "Citizen Kane", and then get it released are chronicled in this HBO biopic that is entertaining but not entirely accurate. The film takes a few liberties of the actual events (particularly it's portrayal of Marion Davies), which are more accurately chronicled in a documentary that this was partially based on, "The Battle over Citizen Kane".
Liev Schreiber does a pretty solid job of depicting Welles, and James Cromwell gives a fine performance as William Randolph Hearst, the man that Welles based Kane on. It is a decent TV movie that is interesting if you like cinema history or "Citizen Kane", probably only okay if you are not a big fan.
