David LaChapelle is famous for being a brilliant music video director and photographer. With this documentary following the lives of krumpers and clowns in the ghetto of Los Angeles, he steps outside of those comfort zones to try his hand at features.
The film features some amazing dancing, but what makes it particularly special is how it presents the stories of these people whose lives have been improved by dance. We meet Tommy The Clown, a fixture on the scene who helped begin the clown movement, as well as those who have moved past their association with him to begin their own groups.
This is a short and sweet documentary that shows L.A. in a light we so rarely see, one full of choice rather than inevitability.
