Review of Rize (2005) by Jason Y — 05 Nov 2005
DVD First Viewing, 1 LaChapelle film seen.
I was so incredibly disappointed with Rize that I am pretty much speechless. I was expecting deep insight on a group of African American experiences, but what I got was a boring music video from the director of many Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera commercials (aka music videos).
Although this is completely based on a true story, I would recommend the fiction inside of Craig Brewer's Hustle & Flow over this documentary. Both regard race issues in America, and I feel that Brewer handled the material in a much more compelling and thought-provoking way.
The dancing, or at least its needed athleticism, impressed me to a certain extent, but the whole production did just look like one big music video.
