Review of Risky Business (1983) by Sean S — 14 Nov 2012
The film has the kind of American teen vibe running through it and it's definitely one of Tom Cruise's better performances, but there's a certain untamed wildness about the film that makes it feel uncertain.
At first, I didn't know whether Lana breezing into Joel's house after his sex dream was real or not. The sex scenes were strange given the context. It's supposed to all be part of the "dark" themes of the film, in what I'm guessing is some kind of ploy to be more legitimate, but it would have done well even without the pimp/prostitute/Goodson house used as brothel occurrences.
And then for Joel to do a complete 180 and become a rich douchebag... are the audience supposed to like him more after he becomes a man and doesn't back down from threatening situations? Because I just didn't.
The film has its memorable moments, but the characters are a letdown.
