Review of Risen (2016) by Steve W — 26 Feb 2016
Risen starts of rather well. Roman Tribune Clavius and his squad of romans take down some ruffians, and kill the thief/murderer Barrabas. Then Clavius is informed that Jesus of Nazareth has been crucified and must be taken care of.
From then on, the plot thickens. Jesus' body disappears and the biggest manhunt in history is found. The movie rears to a screeching halt though about halfway through, and then the tension and suspense quickly falters.
Once they actually show Jesus risen from the dead, the movie becomes a philosophical tale, but not overly preachy. The movie has incredible set design, production value and acting, but the story easily dips in the second half.
This one will probably join the Pantheon of religious themed Easter movies, but you could do a lot worse.
