Review of Risen (2016) by Neil R — 28 Mar 2016
An engaging, believable movie which tracks the investigation of Roman tribune Clavius who is commissioned by Pilate first to finish Jesus off, bury him and seal the tomb, and then to look into what has happened to the body when the tomb is discovered empty.
I was impressed at how this film held together biblical accuracy with innovative storytelling, with a new angle on the greatest true story ever told, the death and resurrection of Christ.
Pilate and the ruling Jewish priests are very convincing, as are the disciples and Mary Magdalene, despite one overly goofy Bartholemew. Peter emerges as a very warm and moving character, and the scenes where Clavius confronts the risen Christ are truly electrifying. I shed a tear when Jesus cuddles a leper and heals him.
Joseph Fiennes is intense and watchable, and Cliff Curtis does a great job (despite being 47) playing Jesus, exuding love and truthfulness. Tom Felton (aka Draco Malfoy) does a great job, too, as Clavius' up-and-coming sidekick.
If you're not a believer in the resurrection, without being preachy, this film will definitely make you think - what actually did happen?
Whoever you are, you will be able to relate to Clavius as he discovers more and more about Christ. Go watch it, if you can find a cinema to show it.
