Review of Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011) by Bernard H — 13 Jul 2014
The ape performances bested the humans in every way (IMO Gary Oldman was a throwaway/ replaceable). The motivations of the apes were fleshed out with while the human element just kinda seemed to simply be there in the moment. There are very clear messages regarding human civilization, governance, and our own survival in this movie. The CG was also great, like Academy Award winning great.
The critical hype seems to be overstating it IMO, but it is worth seeing this summer.
Also, do not donate your money to the theater for an upcharged screening. Not worth it in any way.
