Review of Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011) by Adam K — 15 Jul 2014
I'm not really sure how anyone could take a franchise like this seriously but for some reason people treat Planet of the Apes like something more than the sci-fi original movie-grade schlock it is.
Sure, Rise has a bigger budget and some vaguely artistic sensibilities, but ultimately there is nothing here but hammy violent ape action scenes dressed up with a few yawn-worthy mad science character arcs.
James Franco is duller than I ever imagined he could be, and there is no one else bringing a fraction of life to the screen. Andy Serkis as Cesar is theoretically an interesting character with some nuance in his portrayal, a better action catalyst than you'd expect in a film of this ilk, but his potential is wasted without anyone to interact with.
Not a real movie.
