Review of Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011) by Josh T — 19 Jul 2014
Relaunch of the sci-fi classic, this is far superior to Tim Burton's 2001 relaunch.
Unlike the previous films, this is set in modern-day San Francisco, and goes back to the roots of how The Planet of The Apes came to be: how Apes came to be the dominant species rather than mankind (the answer is to do with genetic/viral experiments). Even though it's a relaunch, it still manages to get some of the classic lines in including the famous "Get your hands off me, you damn dirty ape!", although some of the other shocks from the original Charlton Heston film are turned about-face.
It also has several nods - mostly in the background - to the original Charlton Heston film, with the launch of a rocket, and then the headlines in a newspaper reading 'Lost in Space'.
Well worth a watch.
