Review of Rise of the Footsoldier (2007) by Jason J — 13 Sep 2010
A brilliant British gangster movie based on the true story of Carlton Leach, a man who rose from being a football hooligan to a feared underworld criminal and ending with the 1995 Range Rover Killings in Essex in which 3 people he knew were killed.
This movie is another level up from the likes of The Football Factory or even the likes of Green Street, and Ricci Harnett as the lead character makes this more believable than your usual hooligan football movie.
The 80s/90s period detail is captured very well, with haircuts, fashions and soundtrack. Great acting from the likes of Billy Murray. Director Julian Gilbey has created a powerhouse of a movie, he lays on the violence thick and fast that borders on exploitation which may put off some viewers, so if you have a problem with brutality stay away, if not check it out.
Recommended.
