Review of Ripley's Game (2002) by Dylan L — 05 May 2009
Well, it's fine I suppose. John Malkovich does John Malkovich, plus occasional psychotic lapses. He is icy cold as he moves from an act of extreme violence to ordering flowers, but there's an element of 'yeah, seen it before'. Ray Winstone is very good, as is Dougray Scott, but I never believed either of the main two female characters, not even close. And I did begin to get bored of the endless choral score...
I know I shouldn't compare it to the Anthony Minghella film of the original book, but this just felt contrived and detached. I never really cared about the characters. And Malkovich is so cold he loses all the vulnerability of Matt Damon's younger Ripley.
