Review of Rio Lobo (1970) by Dale G — 28 Aug 2013
Rio Lobo, western film directed by Howard Hawks (the last film by the legendary director). Film stars John Wayne, Jorge Rivero. Alongside with Rio Bravo, El Dorado (all directed and starred by John Wayne) contains visible similarities in plots in terms of lonely lawman taking on bad people in the town. It was filmed at Mexico and Arizona.
Civil War has come to an end. Col. McNally (John Wayne) gold shipment train is ambushed by the confederates - McNally believes that someone from inside the Union was selling out the information. After looting rebels let the train go - after war is over he meets the friendly buddies to seek their help in identifying the mole.
Typical Hawks-fashioned film, offering too witty observation on suspects and as well as suspicious moves beforehand- John Wayne is standout with his hulky physique and threatening postures, also that taunting smirk on his face that is enough to give heart attack to outlaws or corrupt lawman. Splendid set designing, outclass photography. Christopher Mitchum (son of Robert Mitchum) also plays as sidekick for John Wayne.
