Review of Rio Bravo (1959) by Richard R — 14 Jun 2008
Texas. There is probably no place like it on Earth. This hugely influential western is one of the landmark films in the genre, essential viewing for any aspiring moving picture connaisseur. John Wayne, in one of his top five roles in my opinion, (and that's saying something!), is the sheriff who finds his border town under siege following the capture of one of the state's most notorious outlaws.
He rounds up a motley crew of men to fight his good fight with the odds stacked heavily against them. Remodelled by John Carpenter in the late 70s with "Assault on Precinct 13", Rio Bravo is in its fiftieth year but shows no signs of losing its power.
Dean Martin & Ricky Nelson provide the big man with ample support and if Angie Dickinson isn't the best femme fatale actress of that particular Hollywood generation, I would like to hear who is.
Seminal masterpiece.
