Review of Rio Bravo (1959) by Mr. J — 09 Aug 2008
I tend to put this one before "The Searchers", "The Wild Bunch", "Stagecoach" and the western I like almost as much as " Rio Bravo", "Ride The High Country" because I love the pace of the movie and the way everyone plays off of each other. This is due to Hawks and his unique point of view.
He was a big believer in telling a story through the actions of a group of professionals. Watch "To Have and Have Not", "Only Angels Have Wings", "His Girl Friday" or any of his other gazillion classic films and you'll see what I mean.
I'll also mention that the song "My Rifle, My Pony And Me" is the first song I ever sang my son to sleep with. I wish I could get a recording of the Dino/Ricky duet.
