Review of Rio Bravo (1959) by Bronwyn V — 28 May 2010
''John Chance(John Wayne) is a small town Texas sheriff holding a murderer in his jail. Unfortunately, the killer's brother is a rich man with dozens of hired guns, and Chance's only friends are Dude(Dean martin), a drunken hasbeen deputy, Stumpy(Walter Brennan), a gimpy old man, Colorado(Ricky Nelson), a greenhorn kid, and Feathers(Angie Dickinson), a big-hearted card sharp. The siege is on ......It makes a great Western: good guys in white hats, bad guys in black hats, townspeople content to stand aside and to let the battle be fought between the outlaws and the man with the tin star, a beautiful woman to distract the hero and finally help him when the chips are down....The script and acting are spot-on and the mood created through out is what makes this a ''classic'' and if you want to see an almost perfect film I highly recommend this masterpiece. This is a true classic.".
ps: one of Quentin Tarantino's favourite films and apparently he screens 'Rio Bravo' for potential girlfriends as a test of their compatibility...very interesting!!!!!
