Review of Rio Bravo (1959) by Jukka H — 11 Sep 2010
I really can't stand just about any American Western, maybe because they include John Wayne, and he could easily be called one of the worst actors ever to hit the screen. I only watched this film because I have always been a big Dean Martin Fan.
However I like to watch all different kinds of movies, and study them, I guess that includes the American Western. I did like "The Searchers" though. Rio Bravo is a lot of fun with drama on the side.
John Wayne does his usual, sort of "acting" but its mainly just him trying to look more manly and tougher than he actually is, however he actually kind of acts in the film, I guess he was so popular because he represented the stereotypical "patriot" a guy who used his words and was afraid to use violence.
Dean Martin was actually a pretty damn good actor. Ricky Nelson did not have too hard of a role, he just kind of had to sit there and sing a little bit and there would be millions of girls flocking to the theater.
Angie Dickinson really did not have to do a lot of acting either, she just had to sit there and look beautiful and maybe cry a little bit, just so she could say she did some acting. With this review one might think that I did not like the movie, well that's wrong.
It probably the most enjoyable western I've ever seen, it's actually pretty well written and directed, and it's one that I would love to see again.
