Review of Rio Bravo (1959) by Ben D — 14 Jul 2007
Watching this nowadays you might pick up on one or two cliches - but of course this is the movie that invented the cliches in the first place, so not really a criticism. A wonderful turn from Dean Martin as a talented gunslinger trying to reclaim his sobriety, while John Wayne's love scenes with Angie Dickinson are at once charming and hilarious (you might say a bit unbelievable, but give the lucky fucker the benefit of the doubt).
The supporting cast is stocked with laughs too, particularly the garrulous 'Stumpy' and comedy-Mexican Carlos. In short, a character-driven classic with an explosive ending. What fun.
