Review of Rio (2011) by Kevin R — 22 Apr 2013
If our featherless friends can do it, how hard can it be?
Blu is a macaw from Minnesota with a loyal owner and all the comforts of a well taken care of pet. Jewel is an independent macaw that loves flying and living in the wild. Jewel and Blu are both captured and held to be sold. Blu and Jewel will have to work together to gain their freedom and find their way to their previous life.
"Once in a while I pee in the bird bath.".
Carlos Saldanha, director of Ice Age, Robots, Ice Age: The Meltdown, Ice Age: The Dawn of the Dinosaurs, and the upcoming Rio 2, delivers Rio. The storyline for this picture is fairly straightforward and not overly creative. The animation is great and on par with other current animated pictures like Despicable Me and Madagascar. The voices are 'B/C' grade and include Ann Hathaway, Will I Am, Jaime Foxx, Wanda Sykes, Jane Lynch, and Jesse Eisenberg.
"I was tall, over one foot two.".
Rio is a movie I recently DVR'd for my daughter. I actually thought it was going to be better than it was. I would say this is on par with Madagascar and Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs but a step down from Kung Fu Panda and the Shrek pictures and nowhere near the Pixar classics (Wall-E, Incredibles, etc). Overall, I would watch this with your children but I wouldn't add it to your DVD collection.
"He's a nasty bird.".
Grade: C+ (6.5).
