Review of Rio 2 (2014) by David B — 03 Aug 2014
The fun and entertainment of the original is nowhere to be found, replaced instead with a rushed and overstuffed plot which leads to a film that tries to reach out in so many directions that it ends up getting nowhere.
It's no surprise that the CGI is amazing, beautiful and colorful but it seems they forgot to put a story in, with a weak and almost confusing script, the voice cast do their best to make the most of it, which is another highlight, the original voice cast are back and are just as good, along with some new ones but there are to many new characters, it sometimes doesn't make you care.
It's a shame as I was looking forward to this only to be disappointing and the quick wit sucked out from the awesome original. All in all, though, the movie feels at once too busy and too derivative.
That's no easy feat, but it's also one sequel-makers probably shouldn't aspire to. I don't think it's the last we'll see of Blu and Jewel but for now they should stay in their nests.
