Review of Rings (2017) by Matthew H — 11 Feb 2017
Rings definitely couldn't hold a candle to the original. Where the original was deliberate, concise and thoroughly entertaining, Rings is a mess of scenes that often don't flow or even make sense.
The movie was a non-stop train of palm to face moments with every turn of the story exhaust more of my suspension of disbelief. That said, there were bright moments. Vincent D'Onofrio's performance was stellar as always.
The character may not have had much depth, but D'Onofrio has a way of making even the most mundane characters seem almost otherworldly. The cinematography was mostly impressive. There were a few shots that felt clumsy and forced, but for the most part it was shot with skill.
Overall, I can't recommend wasting money on this. Ultimately, the movie had no point and it's clear that this was just a cash grab to capitalize on the nostalgia craze that sweeping our generation.
Wait until this comes on TV and this will make a nice distraction.
