Review of Ringing Bell (1978) by Ryan F — 17 Dec 2009
Chirin no Suzu, released outside of Japan as Ringing Bell, is a truly haunting Japanese animated film that spins a complex morality web about a baby lamb named Chirin whose mother is killed by a wolf that raids his farm one evening.
Devastated by his mother's death, the young lamb attempts to exact revenge on the wolf. It starts off somewhat child-aimed, but quickly becomes this darkly toned beast about revenge and loyalty. Also, the captivating musical score is a pitch perfect backdrop for all the grim intensity.
A bit hard to find, even illegally, but worth the effort.
