Interesting question - what would you do. Probably not what he did actually, given that his wife is out there for two days and shows no symptoms whatsoever except coughing, which subsides when she stays out of the ash.
Probably not what his wife did either - having no symptoms but going to the hospital where she would be near all the sick folks? Wait at home for the antibiotics love! The ending is pretty poor too, a good twist but unrealistic - the guy would have been offered treatment.
His house "incubated the ash into a lethal hybrid?" Hmmmm!
