Review of Riding in Cars with Boys (2001) by Eoin H — 17 May 2008
Half way through I thought this movie was terrible. But sticking with it paid off as that there are several very fine scenes late in this film.
The film asks Barrymore to act teenaged to middle aged and she does relatively ok. However Zahn, Woods and Murphy are really good.
Penny Marshall directs and is workmanlike in putting this together with some moments of brilliance here and there. The later scenes I've already mentions but also strong is the portrayal of the 70s. Something rings very very true in these bits of the film. This is perhaps not surprising for Laverne from Laverne and Shirley.
