Review of Riding in Cars with Boys (2001) by Heather — 14 Jan 2009
Beverly loves boys, but she knows her limits: nothing below the waist. Ray, however, a sweet natured by slightly air-headed guy is the exception to her rule and shortly after meeting him she ends up pregnant-at age fifteen! At her wedding, which was insisted upon by her disappointed father, Beverly(played by actress Drew Barrymore) finds out that her best friend, Faye (played by actress Brittany Murphy) is pregnant also, and the two console each other on the youth that they've lost.
RIDING IN CARS WITH BOYS is a true story based on the autobiography by Beverly Donofrio about her youthful days of rebellion, and teenage motherhood. Drew Barrymore is incredible in this role as an Italian-American who is far too smart to be stuck where she is in this life.
James Woods plays Beverly's father. And Lorraine Bracco plays Bev's long-suffering mother who looks after Bev's house, her son, and her husband while Bev's studying to for her GED and a scholarship to NYU.
It's Bev's drive and ambition that turn her hardship into triumph and survival. Eventually she realizes her hown dreams, and her son's.
