Review of Riding in Cars with Boys (2001) by Mark B — 29 Jan 2010
I suspect the title and assumed content of this film would have many of the male persuasion running for the hills. And for the majority, that might not be a bad idea. But this slow-starting movie packs a pretty good punch at the end, and provides some great social commentary, augmented by several stylish performances. I give it a solid recommendation, for guys and gals alike.
First billing went to Drew Barrymore. I?ve always been a fan of hers, and this is probably the most demanding role of her career. Selling a 14 year old girl coming of age and a middle aged mother on the same reel is nothing to sneeze at, and Barrymore does a solid job.
However, I must say the real star was the late Brittany Murphy. Watching this film was a striking reminder of how talented this young lady was. Her scene with Barrymore, where they are practicing breaking the news about the pregnancy, is one for the ages.
Guys, don?t be scared. Give this movie a shot. Ladies, I suspect you?ll need no encouragement to see this. Rest assured, you?ll be happy you did.
