Review of Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles (2005) by Kelsey C — 10 Apr 2008
Sometimes directors may do a small film on the side or in the midst of a big production just "for fun". Wayne Wang did "Princess of Nebraska" while making "A thousand years of good prayers"; Wong Kar Wai made "In the mood for love" while the whole concept of "2046" is in his mind.
Zhang Yimou made this film with a small budget despite his name has gone mainstream over the years. This film featured wonderful performances from a Japanese cast and the chemistry among them is sensational.
It captured a still life to the happiness and pain of human experiences. "Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles" is a cry-out from the director, and his claim for his reputation as one of the best Chinese director who can make both high profile (not necessarily good) films and low budget (and at the same time, artistically satisfying) movies.
