Review of Ride with the Devil (1999) by Kenneth S — 29 Aug 2009
This civil war film tells the story of the Southern Bushwackers, vigilantes who fought near the North/South border. Nothing about this film makes it very special, but it's not exactly bad, either. The main reason I'd recommend this film is the performance by folk superstar Jewel.
She does a fantastic job, and it's truly a shame that she doesn't act more often. Also, after watching this film, I've come to a conclusion: Jonathan Rhys Meyers single-handedly ruins every film he's in.
Whenever I see him, I cringe at his homely face and his terrible acting skills. Anyway, Ang Lee's direction is fine, the cinematography is good, the story is intriguing, even if it's a bit muddled.
Overall, this is an uneven film worth viewing once.
