Review of Ride with the Devil (1999) by Roland S — 02 Sep 2011
Is there nothing Ang Lee can't do? All of his films are gorgeous and this is no exception. I think this film was buried on release due to its portrayal of a large section of the country. One character's offense at a Kansas town building a school before building a church was brilliant.
Jeffrey Wright is truly amazing as a freed slave who fights with a trusted Southern friend, and eventually begins to realize what that means. A bit long but so worth it. The Criterion release, as always, has worthwhile extras.
