Review of Ride Along (2014) by Christian C — 30 Dec 2014
The marketing campaign for this movie was great. I remember laughing until I cried during the trailers. Unfortunately, the best jokes were included in them. Even though he always plays some variation of the same character, Ice Cube is always fun to watch and Kevin Hart is usually pretty amusing, too. Together, something doesn't quite click. It's no help that the movie's story consists of recycled bits of better movies that try (and fail) to hold together using the leads' chemistry. Ironic, considering the director's last name.
It's also a cardinal sin in my book to waste the supremely talented John Leguizamo on terrible roles.
Shortcomings aside, it is a true pleasure to see Ice Cube and Laurence Fishburne together again, riffing on their relationship from Boyz n the Hood. Their scenes together make the movie worth watching.
