Review of Ride Along 2 (2016) by Dylan D — 17 Apr 2016
A most predictable attempt to exploit the wonderful chemistry between Ice Cube and Kevin Hart from the first movie, Ride Along 2 offers more of the same, relying fully on the freshness of its leading actors. Clichéd, uneven and with plot full of huge holes, the movie still offers some decent laughs and good action sequence which save it from being a complete disaster.
The story continues from almost where it finished in the first movie. Just before the wedding of Ben (Kevin Hart) to James'(Ice Cube) sister Angela (Tika Sumpter), both cops get involved in a dangerous investigation and have to go to Miami where they team up with Maya (Olivia Munn). There is nothing original or remarkable in the story and it hugely relies on its cast. The problem is that if Ice Cube is as cool as he can be, Kevin Hart's hyper-active presence is annoying at certain moments as he simply overacts. If you are fan of Kevin Hart, Ice Cube, the first installment of the buddy-cops-no-brainer-comedies genre, you will actually be pretty fine with the issues of Tim Story's movie. Unfortunately, if you were satisfied with the original delivery and this time you expect something more, or simply you are searching for a better action comedy, Ride Along 2 will probably disappoint you with its overall mediocre level. Watchable on the TV or on a plane, but certainly not worth spending money on it (theater, renting it or streaming it).
