Review of Riddick (2013) by Axel O — 02 Jun 2018
I watched this film at night in a small flat with very thin walls, where the audio was set so low I only understood half the dialogue. That doesn't matter beacause Riddick isn't about the dialogue, although it is sort of about bad one-liners.
Riddick is about being really cool and tough but also being kind of good, in a dangerous and sexy way. Riddick dodges bizarre energy bullets by jumping in the air and twisting around, and then kills people with knives hidden in his clothes.
Riddick befriends and trains an alien hyena, and their bond is the closest thing to love shown in this movie. Riddick says a lot of shit in a real deep voice. I want his voice to tell me it'll be all OK.
Riddick has only two female characters with spoken lines (and a few with no lines and no clothes) and both of them have their own rape narrative. Riddick's ending makes no sense on a human level. It feels as though the hook of the film is only introduced in the last 20 minutes and it doesn't make a lot of sense either.
