Review of Riddick (2013) by Matt W — 31 Mar 2014
A slow sci-fi film with some entertaining flourishes.
It starts boldly with a 30 minute opening, without much speech, as Riddick tries to survive alone on a dangerous planet. it was probably the strongest section, and the most simple. And there is a dog. Which was entertaining for a while.
Although this sequence is strong, unfortunately in the grand schemes of things it is unnecessary for the rest of the story. As this film is nearly 2 hours. While the story is pretty bland, and virtually a repetition of Pitch Black.
I enjoyed Katee Sackhoff in the role, but most of the mercenaries I did not care for. This is the section that dragged, as the audience is then put into the position of the mercenaries as they slowly being attacked by Riddick.
A bold decision, but it doesn't all work as a unified film.
The finale is quite entertaining, but it takes a while to get there. It is clearly better than The Chronicles of Riddick, but is probably on the same level as Pitch Black.
Although I didn't love Pitch Black.
