Review of Ricochet (1991) by Lauren B — 11 Mar 2008
I recently had the chance to watch this flick again... And it's even better now.
Back then the cast was decent... But by today's standards, it's absolutely stellar.
Denzel, Lithgow, Pollak... Ice-T. Ok... Maybe not quite Ice-T, but he hadn't even made "Cop Killer" yet, so I'll cut him some slack.
Here's the gist... Denzel is a young hot shot cop. Lithgow is a not so young gangster. Denzel's at the right place, at the right time to stop Lithgow from making his big deal... Years pass and Denzel becomes a hot shot DA, and Lithgow has been stewing in prison with nothing but vengeance on his rehabilitation schedule. Of course Lithgow breaks out, hunts down Denzel, and proceeds to do THE best ruination ever. Add in your Hollywood wrap-up and we're DONE!
Yes... After 3rd Rock it's hard to imagine John Lithgow being a bad guy...
Yes... Denzel has played better cop roles...
Yes... Alan Silverstri wrote the score with a piece of tracing paper and "Predator" on video tape.
Doesn't matter... This movie is hard as nails. It eats rocks and poops concrete.
Ever really want to see someone go down in flames?
Stick this flick in whatever box you use to watch movies, and bask in the malevolence of it all... Hollywood doesn't produce mean stuff like this anymore, you could never get this past the Oscar consideration committee... There would have to be a deep social message, and terrorism would have to be blamed, and the war on drugs... And Mexicans...
And the Dutch.
