Review of Ricky (2009) by Private U — 12 Jul 2009
Thinking on the relationship in the modern family.
The idea of the film â??Rickyâ?? is based on Tremainâ??s novella. The film reflects on the relationship of the modern family, doesnâ??t focus on any trickery. Even though the storyline is absurd, it stimulates deep thought about the family-how to maintain the relationship, find out the value inside and the true love; all is worth to probe into the relationship in the family.
The style is not uniform; there is realistic daily action and surrealistic fable combined together. I do not really understand the film because it has different sides. On the one hand, it talks about the single mother under pressure or how to have love. On the other hand, the daughter has abnormal thinking. Nevertheless, it presents the relationship of the stepfather, and all the things make confusion. Between the loss and gain, Katie meets Paco, but she leaves behind Lisa: Katie gains Ricky, but she loses Paco. The family gains Ricky, they loses freedom. The great irony is that the media report on an unusual spectacle at any cost without the judgment and affect the public life. Also, the parent gains the money to show Ricky in front of the public then they lose Ricky. Ricky appears as the painful member of the family, and he disturbs the relationship of the family, creates a lot of questions. Also all the things become an illusion. After Ricky disappears, Katie, Paco and Lisa start to have self-examination.
At the end crazy Katie walks into the river and is terribly strange. Then the insight of â??Rickyâ?? changes everything in Katieâ??s family. Katie is totally different from before, the relationship as no intercourse between water and fire change to be in concordance. Katieâ??s lost normal human feelings, she becomes good-natured. It appears as though without the soul.
