Review of Ricki and the Flash (2015) by Katarzyna M — 24 Aug 2015
Underneath the pretty typical story-telling I think there is actually a lot going on in Ricki and the Flash. Meryl Streep is awesome as usual but that's a given, the surprise performances in the movie were here real life daughter Mamie Gummer and Broadway legend Audra McDonald.
Both are wonderful here and my only real complaint with the movie is that I think they were kind of under used here, and both could have used some scenes however I do realize the movie is called Ricki and the Flash so rightfully so it's mostly about Ricki.
I think the best thing about the script to me was it's a very mature look at choices we make in life, and yes those choices can sometimes be selfish and damaging to those affected by them but sometimes they were the right decisions for yourself.
Ricki doesn't do the typical happy ending, I mean it has a nice ending but it doesn't pander to the audience and give us what we think or maybe even want. Ricki made choices and she's not completely vindicated at the end but she's on her way to be.
