Review of Ricki and the Flash (2015) by Linda H — 15 Mar 2016
Meryl Streep is amazing in this movie as Ricki. All the supporting actors/actresses are wonderful as well.
The life of Ricki as a poor musician/checkout clerk is done well enough at the beginning. The contrast between the supposedly red-neck white trash working class represented by Ricki, and the Bourgie McMansion middle class represented by her ex-husband Pete is craftily exaggerated for comedic effects. However in the effort of making this a "family" comedy that can be marketed to everyone, the script seems to be watered down, the conflicts quickly glossed over and the ending degenerates into a big happy wedding song and dance. Still, in spite of the weak script, I like the movie very much and would recommend everyone to see it.
