Review of Revolutionary Road (2008) by Tim C — 15 Sep 2010
"American Beauty Redux" is the nickname for this movie, and it is completely deserving of it considering the score is pretty much the same and the angst of suburban living is the forefront. Still, it's nice to see Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet together again, such great chemistry.
The film really captures the depressing superficiality of 50s suburbia as Leo plays an unconventional man who becomes conventional out of his own insecurities, and Kate plays a woman yearning to escape for meaning in a time when that sounds crazy.
Kathy Bates plays the good 50s prim and proper lady very well, and Michael Shannon's character is spot on in his observations that are just as crazy to his time period as Kate's character's quest to find real happiness in a time which doesn't care for her individual happiness.
What happens to them? You'll have to watch and find out.
