I read the screenplay for this when I was attending Metro. Now, having watched it on TV, it's still a bleak experience, but seeing this young couple go from a life of energy, hopes and dreams, and happiness to steadily deteriorating right before our eyes and conforming to the standards of the household and males and females in the 1950's, Kate Winslet's April feels that her independent spirit is being suffocated and the years of planning to move to Paris with her husband Frank (Dicaprio) have been squandered. Frank, however, has lost his idealistic nature in exchange for one of the realist; one of a man whom feels he has to continue the legacy of his father. Yet the both of them are bored and growing detached--- their love has now become a road less traveled; one of continuous bickering and feuding and harsh words hurled back at one another. It even resorts to infidelity.

Like "Blue Valentine," it is hard to watch this promising couple go from a life of love and big dreams to a life of lost possibilities, but under Mendes guiding hand, there's certainly much to invest yourself in.
