I read this book when I was about 15, 16ish and honestly, I didn't get it. I enjoyed Yates writing, but I didn't get the point of it all. Well I don't know whether is was the movie, the fact that I'm older, or a combination of both, but I thought this was fantastic.

It was a strong adaptation, with fantastic acting. It's really interesting following the couple as they struggle with their unfulfilled dreams. It really is an interesting commentary on the "american dream".

Because technically, this couple had it. The cute suburban house, the 2 kids, the steady job. Kate Winslet's character, April, says at one point "who makes these rules?", which is a really good point, who says that that kind of life is the one your "supposed" to lead? If you actually listen to what they're screaming at each other about, it's all very interesting.

Maybe this is actually a horror movie. After watching it, I know I'm terrified to end up like them haha. A lot of that can obviously be attributed to Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. They both turn in fantastic performances as the couple who wanted more but it just couldn't happen.

They both do an amazing job at really playing these characters honestly, I hated them and felt bad for them, all at the same time. Basically, they were human beings. Also really liked Kathy Bates as Mrs.

Givings, one of their neighbors, and Michael Shannon as her socially inept son. Overall, a thoroughly depressing movie that is worth a watch for the story and the acting.
