Review of Revolutionary Road (2008) by Dave M — 11 Feb 2013
I get it. It's interesting but at the same time it's boring. Life in the 50s was built on tradition and conformity, and when someone wants to break out and be different they're viewed as insane, immature.
Some just tune out the rest of the world and carry on as if everything is fine when it clearly isn't. The characters played by Kate and Leo are like the first generation of punk rebellions. The supporting characters give them various structures and obstacles to bounce off of to form their own opinions or be forced to accept someone else's opinion.
It's more of an entertaining movie to talk about than actually watch. Its theme is interesting but the story is a yawn. What makes it watchable are the realistic performances, the excellent direction, the subtle but beautiful score.
An extremely well crafted and produced film but hardly recommendable to anyone looking for entertainment or anything remotely associated to a smile. This is filmmaking at maybe some of its finest, driest wine.
