Revolutionary Road is a good film kept from greatness by its own melodramatic orchestration. It is no less stringent and visceral, however, much thanks to Justin Haythe's apt screen adaptation of Richard Yates' novel, stirring performances by the two leads, and, perhaps most significantly, the production's art department, which delivered one of the most brilliant film sets of 2008 -- one that provoked as much as the story it paved the foundation for.
